We celebrated Pongal on 14th of January. This is a harvest festival celebrated by Tamilians at the end of harvest season. Pongal means "overflowing" which signifies abundance and prosperity.
On Bhogi, the day before Thai Pongal, we cleaned the entire house and threw unwanted things from the house. We tied sugar canes at the entrance of our house and the girls drew some kolams on our porch.
The next day, at sunrise, we boiled fresh milk in a new clay pot and waited till the milk boils over out of the pot before shouting "Pongolo Pongal" . We cooked sweet milk rice in the pot and after prayers, had them for breakfast. Yummy!
In the evening, we performed prayers, thanking and praying for good health and prosperity.
The cake above visualise all that I describe above. As a friend commented recently, we actually have cakes for all occasions.
